Forecourt Signs Sell
Captive audiences are a sales opportunity not to be missed. A strategically positioned poster or advertisement which is in clear view can produce results. Garage forecourts are a prime example of this.
Your first task is to get the customer to use your garage. A local garage had the bright idea of advertising "cheap fuel 2 days a week" on a heavy base sign at the entrance to the forecourt. Easily seen from up to 50 yards away it invariably drew the motorists in with the enticing offer. There was a 5 in seven chance that the sale would be made at normal prices so the extra traffic through the garage more than made up for the discount offered on the other two days. Cleverly, they changed the days on a regular basis so no one could predict the days when the cheaper fuel was on offer. The Sentinel and Sightmaster are good examples of the type of signage required to carry this off.
Once you have the customer at the pump they are invariably looking at the pump and surrounding area while waiting for their tank to fill. Offers positioned in clip frames attached to the pumps could encourage additional sales of "novelty" items. Many are the motorists who have bought torchs that they didn't really need but were tempted into by a nicely presented offer. Snap frames are ideal for this type of advertising as they make maintenance easy.
The next focus point for your captive audience is the entrance to the shop or pay station. Most garages use the space beside the door to place display cases containing today's newspapers. Poster frames on the wall can also be used to emphasise the offers available inside.
The final point at which ideas can be planted in the customer's brain is at the till. Here a small chalk board and a few sample products can prise a few more pounds from the customers grasp. Chocolate is a big seller and drivers often need to recharge their internal engines before continuing on their journeys.
The basic rule is that if you want to sell you have to present the opportunity properly. You can't rely on counter staff to be proactive in the "would you like chips with that?" sort of way. Often they are simply not earning enough to care about your business. Retail display products are, on the other hand, easy to maintain and don't require salaries or commission. A shrewd investment and a proactive sales campaign is likely to reap rewards. Your campaigns can be planned in advance and cycled so that you have new offers on every week. The retail display products available now are low maintenance and provide an ease of use that will make the task much less onerous than you think.
Plan your strategy by putting yourself in the position of your customers. Try to view your business from each of the pumps to see what they see and then decide where to best place your displays.
