NBA Allstars VS Phillipine Team: Road To Shame?
Filipinos are getting excited about possibility of having NBA stars that may include Kobe, Chris Paul, Fisher, Evans, Harden in the country. That's a very good news for their fans but let's take a look at what's at stake.
They are going to play against our very own Smart Gilas who carries the name of the Philippine Basketball. This is the Smart Gilas composing of youngsters from college who struggled against intermediate-level Asian countries. We can't deny the fact that most of these young guys are too small for their positions as they have 5-ft guards and 6'5"-below forwards.
I can imagine the strongest lineup if they get players from the PBA. We have 6'4"-6'5" guys who can play guards and some athletic tall guys can fill in the forward spot. In the center spot, the veterans badly need replacements that should undergo development programs. In a league, where players are small, the height isn't utilized to play in the position for international game. I won't consider who's the best stats players in the PBA league but I'll choose who can be effective in international play especially on the height area. But then again, the lineup is arguable.
Its not only the Philippines who will see the invitational game but the whole world as well because the names Kobe, Chris Paul, Fisher are on the court. If we're playing against these type of players, might as well match them-up the best way we can. Its also an understatement on their skills to be playing those Gilas Kids (they would really look like kids compared to NBA stars).
Filipinos are getting sick and tired of hearing excuses that commercial teams are hindering players from joining the national team. Well one of the main reasons why PBA lose its fans because of slumps in international game even in Asia. Fans are loosing hope on basketball because they know Gilas isn't the strongest option we got. They are just the ones available and a product of an uncertain plan due to conflicts of Philippine Basketball Organizations.
Why can't the PBA learn from the sudden rise of football popularity. Its due to international success and they did it by searching for the best filipino soccer players all over the world. More convenient for basketball, the best players are just playing in the league. Without international success, popularity of the sport goes down.
The respect of the world to Philippine Basketball is at stake in here. We can't look like fools being midgets trying to play basketball. The height is nearly there; we just don't know how to utilize it and develop players to play the position. So the fans really need to see best & right Filipino players to play against international players.
This invitational circus game is good for hungry basketball fans but it won't cover up the ugly circus ride of Philippine basketball nor give the right amount of satisfaction the PBA fans need.
