F Frankfurt: Cosmopolitanism with a real difference

The minute you get off at the Frankfurt Hahn Airport you begin to comprehend the brisk efficiency and the no-nonsense stance of the city. Avant garde malls, ritzy skyscrapers, and the sleekest corporate offices greet the eye when you drive into the city from the airport.

Frankfurt may be the world’s tiniest metropolis but it is the largest banking capital in Europe exerting considerable financial clout all across the globe. Whether you are a business traveler, a student, or vacationer the city will bowl you over. Frankfurt is also one of those highly cosmopolitan metropolises where you are likely to come across more than one person who speaks your language. It is said – with great conviction, it needs to be emphasized – that one in three people that you will run into may not be German citizens. This exciting city is always on the go, always in a state of stimulating flux.

For those who may not be aware, Frankfurt was founded in the first century by the Romans. It was sometime in mid ninth century that the city was named as the capital of Eastern Franks under the Treaty of Verdun.

Much of Frankfurt’s suburbia was devastated after World War II but the city, true to form, rose and re-invented itself with a vengeance. It is here that the Deutschmark was created and Europe’s single new currency – the euro – was introduced.

Obviously, there are five star hotels’ galore in Frankfurt, styled and customized as per the travelers’ needs.

For business travelers a favorite pick happens to be Le Meridien Parkhotel which is bang next to the core banking sector and in the idyllic surroundings of the ‘Wiesenhuettenplatz’. This five star luxury hotel is also close to the railway station and is known for its lovely Art nouveau guestrooms.

Those longing for a more picturesque venue there is the InterContinental Frankfurt next to the river Main. This classic luxury hotel is perfect for sight-seeing purposes as it is practically cheek-by-jowl to St. Paul’s Church, Frankfurt Cathedral, and Rmer.

Step out of your luxury hotel to take in the dazzling sights of this city quilled with star-grazing skyscrapers and old city Borse or stock exchange. For those who are culturally-inclined, we recommend a dekko at the refurbished Alte Oper with its great statues of Goethe and Mozart. Or, you can go over to the Deutsches Filmmuseum with its impressive library and voluminous archives. Its film specials and premiers attract throngs of enthusiastic film-goers.  So what else can you get up to in Frankfurt apart from visiting museums, churches, and financial landmarks? Plenty, apparently.

You can go down to any of the beaches on a warm day and swim to your heart’s content, play Frisbee or simply take a walk.

Or you can simply shop till you drop be it hi-fashion goods, the latest sportswear or the best farm produce. As we said, there is something for everybody.
