2010 Pittsburgh Football Predictions

The Panthers almost got it done last year but came up short in a 45-44 loss to Cincinnati in their season finale. Now Pitt will be determined to build on that success and will employ a mass amount of talent on both sides of the ball to get the job done. With a sound rushing attack, respectable passing game and hardy defense, this could very well be the year that the Panthers one up their River City Rival to take back the number one spot in the Big East for the first time since being co-champions in 2004.

Offensive standouts Dion Lewis and Jonathan Baldwin who combined for nearly 3,000 yards, along with 11 other solid starters will be making their return this season. The reports out of spring practice are teeming with optimism as Pittsburgh seem primed to hit the ground running when they open the season against Utah.

Offense:

After winning the National Freshman of the Year, and Big East Rookie of the Year, sophomore running back Dion Lewis will dig in as one of the team leaders and will likely carry a big portion of the offensive load on his shoulders. The Dorsett-like rookie sensation rushed for 1,799 yards in 2009, and tallied 17 TD's. His ability to find escape routes makes him a threat to any defense.

He will take his handoffs from pivot man Tino Sunseri, who played just in just four games as back up to Bill Stull last year. Sunseri faces the daunting task of transitioning from backup to starter, but will be in good company with a host of new starting QB's in this year's Big East Conference. If needed, the Panthers can call on junior Pat Bostick, who after deciding to redshirt last season, has improved both mentally and physically.

Coming in as the greenest QB on the roster is newcomer Mark Myers. Rated No. 4 on Rivals' "country's strongest arm" list, the St. Ignatius prodigy tossed for 2,127 yards and 20 touchdowns with only eight interceptions as a senior. He is expected to get a strong look as a backup.

With the inexperience at quarterback, much of the passing attack rests on the receiving corp., an area where the Panthers are thin. One exception is junior wide out Jonathan Baldwin who snagged eight touchdown receptions last season and was over 1,000 yards receiving.

Needless to say, Pitt will have to get a lot done on the ground. This shouldn't be a problem for star sophomore running back Dion Lewis, who was ranked third nationally as a freshman, averaging better than 138 yards a game. Lewis will get some help from backup Ray Graham along with smash mouth fullback Henry Hynoski.

The running game should take some heat off Sunseri.

Defense:

Despite several key losses, this is where the Panthers have an opportunity to rise about the rest.

The defensive line is bookend by Greg Romeus, an All-American candidate, and Jabaal Sheard. The duo combined for 13 of the teams 47 sacks, 23 quarterback hurries and 22 tackles for losses in 2009.

Behind them are Greg Williams and Max Gruder at linebacker, as well as starting safety Dom DeCicco. Gruber recorded 91 tackles while DiCicco added 88 from last season.

Rounding out the secondary are cornerbacks Antwuan Reed, Jarred Holley and Saheed Imoru. Reed established himself as a leader and has been one of the most improved players of the spring.

2010 Prediction: Second in the Big East. Head coach Dave Wannstedt was rewarded with a two-year contract extension which will keep him at Pitt through 2014. He will want to keep the alumnus and the fans happy by improving on last season's 10-3 finish.  Currently the 2010 Pittsburgh Panthers are favored at +250 betting odds to win the Big East Conference. I think the odds makers are being generous, considering Pitt's tough nonconference schedule and an offense that is ranked No. 52 overall. .
