NFL WEEK 4: The Showdown and the Letdown
The Baltimore at Pittsburgh game lived up to the expectation. These two teams know each other, they hate each other and they basically knock the hell out of each other. It was like a good old school heavy weight fight. They are if there not already, becoming the best rivalry in the NFL. It was like watching a playoff game in October. It was loud, it was violent and when it was over you could see the happiness in the eyes of the Raven and the dejection in the eyes of the Steelers. Normally watching a low scoring game is boring, like the Chicago New York Giant game, but this one had some drama on every play. On third down and longs, it was interesting to see with each teams defense if they were going to blitz, zone blitz or just rush three and drop eight into coverage and how the offenses would counter. The Ravens defense has always been terrific and the one constant is Ray Lewis. He's all over the field, making tackles in the backfield and in pass coverage. That was a difficult interception at the end of the game. Lewis has great hands. He could play tight end if he wanted. Its hard to believe this is his fifteenth year in the league. Lewis plays like a third year player hungry trying to keep his spot on the roster. He is a lock for the Hall of Fame on the first ballet. Joe Flacco is quickley becoming a top end quarterback. The game winning pass to Housmandzadeh was clutch. It was not easy, because it was timing pass and Flacco had to make sure to look away the safety and make a perfect throw. I would not be surprised if Flacco does not make the Pro Bowl in the next couple of years. The Steelers lost, but should not take any shame. They were within a first down of being 4-0, but penalties did them in at the end. They were also playing with their third string quaterback Charlie Batch , who played well, but he is no Ben Roethlisberger, who is coming back after their bye week. I can't wait for the next installment of this rivalry.
The Washington at Phildelphia was a letdown. A big let down. I was more than surprised that the Eagle fans gave McNabb an ovation when he was introduced. A class response from fans to let him know they appreciated his efforts while he was there. Even when McNabb was booed when the game started, it was more like a , "Sorry Donovan, we have to this to keep our reputation." The game itself was not that exciting. I was expecting a shoot out, but as soon as Michael Vic got hurt in first quarter, the air seemed to be let out of the stadium. It affected every body. The fans, Coach Reid, who had a brain freeze at the end of the half. Even McNabb lost some fire. The reason is Kevin Kolb. Kolb put up some decent statistics, but he either can't or won't throw the ball downfield. He is becoming "Kevin Check Down" with those three yard check down passes to the running backs. They are boring and don't energize anybody. I understand that quarterbacks just can't throw the ball all over the place because they don't want turnovers, but you at least have to spread field. His best pass of the day was the last one, which should have been caught by Avant. McNabb saw what Kolb was doing early on and realized the only way the Redskins were going to lose the game was to turn the ball over. The Eagles are not same team without Vic. They better hope he heals quickly and teach him to slide or they will not sniff the playoffs with Kolb at quaterback.
